Fine Wind, Clear Morning is part of Katsushika Hokusai’s series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji and is also widely known as Red Fuji. Mount Fuji rises across the composition in red tones, with thin traces of snow near the summit and deep green at its base. Without human figures, the mountain itself becomes the sole focus—calm, monumental, and direct.

The Red Slopes

The red slopes fill much of the composition, defining Mount Fuji as one monumental form. Subtle tonal shifts and diagonal marks give the still mountain a powerful sense of volume.

Snow at the Summit

Thin traces of snow near the summit create a precise contrast with the red mountainside. These small white accents sharpen the height and outline of the peak.

Sky and Forest

A clear blue sky, drifting white clouds, and the deep green forest line frame the mountain. Their contrasting color fields make the red slopes and silhouette appear even more distinct.

Original artwork: An Edo-period woodblock print created around 1830–32, using ink and color on paper. Part of Hokusai’s Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, the design is also known as Red Fuji and presents the mountain through broad red slopes beneath a clear sky.
