Rainstorm Beneath the Summit is part of Katsushika Hokusai’s series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. The summit rises quietly above the clouds, while the lower slopes are enveloped by dark rain and a sudden storm. A red flash of lightning crosses the mountainside, setting the enduring presence of Mount Fuji against a fleeting moment of turbulence.

Above the Clouds

The summit rises above the heavy clouds with an almost complete stillness. The brightness of the upper composition gives Mount Fuji a calm and enduring presence beyond the storm below.

Lightning Below

A red flash of lightning cuts diagonally across the darkened lower slopes. Its sudden movement creates a vivid tension against the stillness of the summit above.

Light and Shadow

Bright sky and clouds meet the deeply shadowed mountainside. This division reveals two opposing expressions within the same mountain: calm above and turbulence below.
